UPMC [Senior Manager, Internal Communications]

2023-2024

PPG [HR Communications Manager]

  • Elevated HR Communications by introducing a forward-looking strategy, a standard communications cascade, and a proactive and initiative-taking approach to communications both within the HR function and to PPG’s 52,000 employees.

  • Created job aids, templates, processes, and a communications planning tool to deliver self-service communications tactics, empowering internal partners and reducing response time from the HR Communications team by approximately 50%.

  • Revamped HR’s intranet in partnership with the larger global communications teams to create a one-stop-shop for all HR-related news and documents. The Employee Experience Hub increased search functionality, displayed a modern look and feel, and combined disparate information to one place. Of the 19 functional hubs, the Employee Experience Hub consistently saw the highest traffic.

  • Spearheaded a people-focused, all-employee, all HR-content newsletter in connection with the hub: People @ PPG: The Employee Experience Newsletter. The newsletter averaged a 55% open rate compared to the industry benchmark of 32%, and the click rate averaged 4.75% versus a 2.5% industry benchmark.

  • Enhanced the HR function’s newsletter by developing an MS Teams-first approach to news as well as creative and catchy headlines and copy. The HR to HR Newsletter’s typical open rate increased by approximately 35% since its revamp.

  • Designed and executed quarterly HR Town Hall meetings.

  • Led change management communications for Hybrid 3-Day, PPG’s return-to-office program. Days in office increased from under one day per week average to nearly three.

  • Created the first HR Communications Calendar inclusive of all annual events (i.e., performance management and compensation cycle), global and country-specific holidays, DEI celebrations, newsletter publication dates, and various deadlines.

  • Served as a trusted communications advisor as a member of the HR leadership team including the chief Human Resources officer and chief diversity, equity, inclusion officer.

  • Managed an HR Communications Partner.

2021-2023

  • Led change management communications and new program communications for operational priorities including UPMC Travel Staffing, UPMC’s Monthly Loan Repayment Program, Tuition Loan Forgiveness, Continuous Performance Management, and multiple leadership change announcements.

  • Developed strategic communications for Human Resources with:

    • Change management communications including leadership cascades and executive messaging which reflected leadership voice and tone.

    • Continuous performance management, which led to record-high engagement in various channels.

    • UPMC’s first virtual career fair, where more than 1,990 people registered and 914 people attended and 750 applications were filed between the day of the event and the day after.

  • Oversaw strategic communications for Benefits with:

    • Open Enrollment, which saw consistent growth in utilization of specific benefits:

      • Health Care FSA enrollments up 3% from 2021.

      • Dependent Care FSA enrollments up 9% from 2021.

      • PTO Buy up 10% from 2021.

      • PTO Sell up 109% from 2021.

      • 1,300 staff enrolled in the new MetLife Pet insurance.

  • Developed strategic communications and copy for UPMC Nursing with:

    • UPMC Travel Staffing, contributing to more than 1,800 applications and saving UPMC more than $17 million.

    • UPMC’s Monthly Loan Repayment program, leading to more than 1,400 new graduate nurse hires.

    • Tuition Loan Forgiveness Program through the UPMC Schools of Nursing (SON), which exceeded the goal of having 150 students placed. Of the 150 accepted students, 65 are current employees.

    • UPMC Helpers (volunteer, non-clinical support role) program which gained more than 1,000 participants since the initiative’s inception.

  • Led strategic communications for the Center for Engagement and Inclusion:

    • Functioned as the Internal Communications DEI expert.

    • Presented at the Advanced Learning Institute’s (ALI) 3rd Annual Diversity and Inclusion Internal Communications Conference.

    • Developed communications specific to Pride and rallied nearly 600 staff members to participate in the 2019 Pittsburgh Pride parade.

    • Developed content surrounding racial and social injustice after the murder of George Floyd, including a video of staff revealing their personal stories.

    • Created an Employee Resource Group (ERG) toolkit as a self-service tool for members to promote their mission, vision, and values, as well as events.

    • Researched and promoted the most up-to-date and appropriate language while encouraging the team to incorporate cultural nuances into messaging.

  • Served as subject matter expert and trusted communications advisor to internal UPMC clients and leaders such as the chief Human Resources officer; chief diversity, equity, inclusion, and talent management officer; and chief nurse executive.

  • Managed a team of two communications specialists and one manager, as well as mentored and coached junior staff members on communications and professional best practices including implementing strategic plans to achieve communication goals, developing methods and analytics to evaluate communications projects based on effectiveness and cost/benefits, wrote and edited engaging and bold copy appropriate for the audience and the channel, and presented ideas and communications in fresh and compelling ways.
