Poem #16: Kingdom

I can’t make you love me

The way I want you to love me.

I can’t make you drown in my eyes

The way I suffocate in yours.

You make me sip small breaths

Instead of the deep breathing

I employ to keep my pulse steady.

I can’t escape your mood, your energy,

Your rules, your voice.

I run from you, as fast I can

Through a forest filled with our memories.

The trees whisper your name in their branches,

The wet, grassy floor tugs me to hang close.

The sweat drips from my brow as I turn to gaze in wonder and fear at how near you really are.

You are right at my feet and a mile away.

Ye though I walk through the shadow of our death,

I shall fear no evil.

For thine is my kingdom, my power, and our glory.

Forever and ever.
