Poem No. 30

We've been hibernating

for six long months,

our bodies frozen underground,

our breath paused for winter's

endless freeze.

In the distance,

a crack in the icy earth echoes,

our vessels creek awake,

digging upward in the soil

toward the sunlight.

Restless, exhausted, we lift ourselves

curiously to the light,

our eyes adjusting to the aura,

our bodies to this new-found warmth.

Our heartbeats quicken, our stomachs rumble,

accepting the first taste of April with eager tongues.

We no longer starve for spring.
