Poem #29: Yours (unrequited)

Updated: Feb 21

I guess I thought

I had a chance.

I guess I thought

It more than happenstance

That you appeared in my life

Before I was ready for

(you).

I guess I thought

It would be easy.

I guess I thought

Your laugh would free me

From the picture of my life

That someone else

(drew).

I guess I wrongly think I’m better

Than the average “Eh, she’s whatever,”

But when I saw you standing there,

Combined with my “come-get-me” stare,

And no response? I retract my love letter.

I guess I thought

You’d come running.

I guess I thought

You’d be stunned when

I made it clear

I had my eye on

(you).

I guess I thought

This would be easy.

I guess I thought

You’d be pleased when

I said, “I want this,

(too.”)

But I’m left disappointed

Despite being holy annointed

In your light.

I will fight

To be appointed

(yours).
