The Comedy Obsession

Saying I love stand-up comedy is an understatement. In 2025, I attended 106 shows and created a MeetUp group specifically geared toward comedic events — Let's Laugh, Pittsburgh.

This personal passion turned into my desire to start working with local comics on their public relations and promotional support through You're Write, Molly.

Established in 2025, Handsome Man Comedy was founded by comedian Drew Scibetta, a Pittsburgh local who envisioned a unique space for comics to perform outside of the standard open mic scene. What began as a curated comedy night at Krazy Karen’s in Sharpsburg,developed into a full-fledged production company which proudly features top-notch and diverse stand-up talent, both local and national. With a home at Millvale Food + Energy Hub’s stage, The Purple Onion, Handsome Man Comedy strives to be a positive and inclusive community partner, providing accessible entertainment to the greater Pittsburgh area. Contrary to popular belief, Handsome Man Comedy is not named after Scibetta himself, but rather a gorgeous Maine Coon who resides at Krazy Karen’s.

Goodbye, 2025. You’ve made me mostly sad and have given me heartbreak, heartache, and heartburn in ways I never thought possible.

But you know what? I also had an incredible amount of fun and goodness. And so here are a few of those highlights (because if I rest in the lows for a minute, I will have too hard a time getting back up):

· Attended 105 comedy shows
· Flew to the beach thrice
· Performed live storytelling and poetry readings 7 times
· Biked a number of miles I’m not willing to try and calculate
· Lost 15 pounds
· Made a few new friends and ignited some old friendships
· Paid off my house
· Started a MeetUp group which now has more than 60 members
· Wrote 22 poems and 12 short stories
· Had one short story published
· Made friends with at least 13 dogs
· Swam in 22 pools

In listing this, it feels as though the year was full of fun and beauty, and while the mood was mostly dark, the bright spots got me through.

So hello, 2026 – may it be the best year yet for everyone (or at least better than this one).

The Moliday ™️ season has been (so far!) full of Cabernet, comedy, and a cold plunge, which (mostly) sounds like every other day of my life , but thanks to those of you who made my birthday just a little more colorful 💓. You only turn 35 once!

I may go to more comedy shows than some actual comics, but NO ONE makes me laugh harder than the people I grew up with (sorry professionals).

I don’t know what it is about my Indiana friends, but I don’t think I’ve ever left a hang with a group of them without crying or choking from laughter.

And it’s absolute magic. ✨

P.S. to my dating app matches who may have actually been talking to my buds thanks to my hijacked phone — I’m not sorry.

Just got home to find out THE book has arrived.

I submitted to @yawpzine and issue 10 was published, inclusive of my story, The Sign — an ode to my love of comedy and how much it means to me.

Special thanks to @donttellpittsburgh and @ron_flem for being the impetus to my obsession of the Pittsburgh comedy scene, to @drew__paul__ who will go down in history for being “abortion joke guy” and the man who produced my birthday comedy show, and to @trevoraustincomedy — this story wouldn’t exist without your offhanded but inspirational commentary. Known for his upbeat, charismatic, and hilarious personality, stand-up comedian Marcus Cox was born in Aliquippa, Pa. Marcus began his comedy career in 2011 after appearing in an amateur performance at the Pittsburgh Improv. Since then, he has taken off thanks to his ability to light up any stage with laughter, and his witty, warm, and powerful delivery. His variety of covered topics includes pop culture, current events, and personal anecdotes, making his performances both relatable and entertaining.

Marcus headlines, hosts, promotes, and performs across various venues in the Midwest and East Coast at numerous venues including The Pittsburgh Improv, The Laugh Factory, FunnyStop Comedy Club, and The Lincoln Lodge. He has also participated in comedy festival in cities such as Cleveland, Grand Rapids, Memphis, St. Augustine, and Baltimore. He has also opened for comedians such as Steve Sabo and Raymond the Amish Comic.

I’m not a fan of New Year’s resolutions, but what I did do at the end of 2024 was create a “fun goal” for 2025: see 75 comedy shows this year. Because I’m an overachiever, I completed that almost two weeks ago.

Of course, I’m not done seeing comedy for 2025, I’d probably perish, but it’s been a real blast. Magical. Electric even.

I LOVE a good barter. I recently spent the day with my pal, videographer-turned-abstract-artist @victoriasutherlandart where, in exchange for someone to assist in shooting some reels with her as the absolute ⭐ she is, I got some much-needed, new headshots. Of course she had the PERFECT backdrop for me.

I like dark chocolate, dark coffee, dark comedy, and men with dark-colored eyes.

They’ve all given my heart – or body – what it needed at the time.

Only one of these things has never left me with a stomachache.

In case you hadn’t guessed, it’s the comedy that hasn’t inflicted me with thick thighs, palpitations, or other wounds of the heart.
